WHY SHOULD I NEUTER MY PET?

Besides preventing the needless deaths of millions of unwanted pets every year which is a pretty big reason in itself to neuter your pets, neutering can prevent many health and behavior problems in those animals that are safely in loving homes already.

Neutered pets have greatly reduced chances of contracting some forms of cancer and urinary tract disease. Early neutering helps prevent prostate disease in male dogs and decreases the chance of your female pets getting mammary cancer to almost zero!

Please forget that old idea that pets should be neutered after their first heat. It’s much better to do it before the hormones kick in.

Veterinarians used to recommend that pets not be spayed or neutered before the age of 6 months. The new school of thought is that it more safe, simple and effective to spay or neuter at an earlier age because there is less bleeding and less body fat. This is a question you should discuss directly with your vet as it pertains to each individual animal.

AN OLDER PET CAN BE THE BEST OPTION

A dog or cat can be such a welcome addition to any family and for many families an older pet is the best option.

Animal shelters and rescue groups throughout the nation are filled with older animals that are eager for homes and eager to please. Thanks to the advances in veterinary medicine, senior pets (7 years or older) have lots of life and loyal companionship to give.

These wonderful senior pets offer many advantages to today’s busy households compared to the average kitten or puppy. These loving seniors are generally calmer, usually already housetrained and are not nearly as likely to chew shoes or scratch furniture.

Before bringing any new pet home, be sure to learn as much as possible about the animal. Many pets up for adoption come with histories that tell whether they will be a good fit for your household, especially if there are children in the house.

Matching the right pet with the right family will ensure a long lasting, loving relationship for all concerned.
